Ingredients & Directions
1 cup Sugar
1 cup Margarine or butter
3 tablespoon Sweet sherry
1 teaspoon anise seed (or 1/2 teaspoon anise extract) or cinnamon
1 Egg
3 cup Flour
2 teaspoon Baking powder
1/4 teaspoon Salt
1/4 cup Sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Mix 1 cup sugar and margarine, sherry and egg in a large bowl. Stir in the remaining ingredients except the 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon. Chill dough for 3 to 4 hours before rolling. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Divide dough into two balls. Roll out each ball to 1/4 inch thick and cut into any shape with cookie cutters. Place on an ungreased sheet. Brush each cookie lightly with water, then sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture on the cookies before baking. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden.
Let your child/children taste the anise first. Often children do not like it as much as adults. If your child/children do not like the anise flavor simply substitute cinnamon oil or flavoring. It is very popular in Mexico.
